    Ingredients and equipment

Here's everything you need to make chocolate bark with potato chips...

    • Milk chocolate: Any kind of milk chocolate bar will work for this recipe. We don't need to add any other ingredients to the chocolate itself, so there's no need to worry about it seizing. I typically use the cheap supermarket's own-brand chocolate because it all tastes just as good to me, but use whatever you like best.
    • Potato chips: Use salted, crinkle-cut chips for the best texture and flavour. This type also makes the bark look a little more interesting and fancy. I used Tesco's own brand.
    • Baking tray: Any size of baking tray will work for potato chip bark. You just need to shape the mixture into a rectangle and you can make it as big or as small as you like. You could even use something like a plate or chopping board if you're in a pinch.
    • Baking paper: To stop the chocolate from getting stuck to the tray.
    • Mixing bowl and utensils: You'll need a large mixing bowl, a wooden spoon for mixing, and a small spoon or spatula to shape the mixture on the tray. You'll also need a sharp knife if you plan to cut the bark rather than snap it.
    • Heatproof bowl: To melt the chocolate in the microwave, or a saucepan to melt it over the stove.

How to make chocolate potato chip bark

Step 1: First, line a baking tray with a sheet of baking paper then set it to one side for now.

Step 2: Measure out 55g of salted potato chips and use your hands to crush them into pieces. Don't crush them too small- around 1-inch pieces will work well.

Step 3: Break 300g of milk chocolate up into pieces and add it to a heatproof bowl or saucepan. Melt slowly until there are no lumps of chocolate left, then add it to the bowl with the potato chips.

Step 4: Mix the ingredients together until all of the potato chips are covered with the melted chocolate. Try not to leave any chips exposed as they tend to go stale quite fast.

Step 5: Transfer the mixture to your lined tin and shape it into a small rectangle. You can do this with a small spoon or spatula.

Step 6: Place the bark in the fridge for about 2 hours until the chocolate has fully set. Then peel it off of the baking paper, break it into pieces and enjoy! Alternatively, cut it into pieces using a sharp knife.

    Top tips

    • If you're melting the chocolate in the microwave, you'll need to take it out every 30 seconds or so and give it a mix. This will stop it from burning or seizing.
    • Don't top the bark with potato chips. If they're not coated in the chocolate, they'll go stale and spoil the bark quite quickly.
    • Use milk chocolate bars rather than chocolate chips as they'll melt a lot easier and give your bark a better snap.

    Variations

    • Although crinkle-cut chips will give you the best texture, you can also use regular salted potato chips if you prefer. If you do this, you could probably squeeze a few more chips in there as they'll take up less space.
    • Swap the milk chocolate for dark or white chocolate to suit your preference. You could also coat half of the chips in one type of chocolate and half in another type.
    • Instead of using potato chips to decorate the bark (which as I mentioned above, will go stale), you can top it with chopped peanuts or sprinkles.

    FAQ

How long will chocolate potato chip bark last?

If you keep it in an airtight container, it'll last for up to 2 weeks. I recommend storing it at room temperature or in a cool, dark place such as a kitchen cupboard.

    Can I freeze it?

Yes, it's ideal for freezing! It won't take long to defrost either. Just pop your bark pieces into an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Alternatively, wrap the entire slab up tightly in clingfilm.
