    Ingredients

Here's everything you need to make this easy Smartie fudge:

    • Milk chocolate: Milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate is the main ingredient for this recipe. You can use whichever brand of milk chocolate you like best. Even the super cheap supermarket-brand chocolate bars will work well if you melt them at a low temperature.
    • Condensed milk: Condensed milk is what turns a block of chocolate into creamy fudge! A lot of people confuse this for evaporated milk but they are not the same thing and the latter will not work in fudge. Learn the difference here. You'll need 1 can or 397g (14oz) of condensed milk for this recipe.
    • Chocolate Smarties: Nestle Smarties are the star of this recipe. You can add them inside and on top of the fudge to create a gorgeous texture and colour. You can really taste all of the different flavours once they're in there! You'll need 1 share-sized bag for this recipe, which is 105g or approximately 3.7oz.

    Equipment

    • 8-inch square baking tin: An 8x8-inch tin is just what you need for this recipe. It's the perfect size, giving your fudge a nice height, and you can get up to 30 small fudge squares out of it. Feel free to use a different size of tin if you like, such as a loaf tin or an 8x10 tin. You can also use my cake pan converter tool to adjust the recipe to fit a smaller or larger tin.
    • Baking paper: Baking paper will stop the fudge from sticking to your tin. It's very important, so don't skip this step!
    • Heatproof bowl: Use a heatproof bowl whenever you're heating ingredients for fudge. I recommend a glass or stainless steel bowl but make sure to double-check that it's safe for microwaving/heating.
    • Saucepan: A saucepan is required if you are using a double boiler to heat your fudge ingredients (I highly recommend you do so). The saucepan should be slightly smaller than your heatproof bowl so that the bowl can sit comfortably on top without touching the water in the saucepan.
    • Wooden spoon: When using a hard mix-in such as Smarties, a wooden spoon is the best tool for the job. It's also great for spooning the thick fudge mixture out into the tin.
    • Silicone spatula: A silicone spatula will stop the fudge from sticking when you're trying to press it down into the tin. When using metal or wooden spoons, the fudge can drag around the tin and be difficult to pat down evenly. A rubber or silicone spatula is my secret tool for this part!
    • Sharp knife: Lastly, you'll need a sharp knife in order to cut your fudge once it's set.

How to make chocolate Smartie Fudge

Step 1: Line an 8x8-inch tin with baking paper. Set it aside for now, ready for your fudge mixture to go into later.

Step 2: Break 450g of milk chocolate into segments and add it to a large heatproof bowl along with 1 tin of sweetened condensed milk (397g).

Step 3: Place the bowl on top of a saucepan of simmering water over low heat on the stove to create a double boiler. Make sure the bottom of the bowl isn't touching the water as this can lead to excess moisture and cause the chocolate to seize.

Step 4: Gently stir the mixture until the chocolate has melted fully. It should look thick and glossy.

Step 5: Take the pan off the heat and stir half a bag of Nestle Smarties (approximately 50g) into the fudge mixture. Then transfer it to your lined tin and press it down into place.

Step 6: Top with the rest of the bag of Smarties and gently press down on them to help them stick.

Step 7: Refrigerate your fudge for 2 hours until firm to the touch. Remove it from the tin, peel the baking paper off the bottom, cut into squares and enjoy! You can get up to 30 small squares or 12 large pieces out of this recipe.

    Top tips

    • Use milk chocolate for the best flavour. It pairs very nicely with the Smarties!
    • The fudge will start to set once you remove it from the heat so make sure to work quickly when adding the Smarties.
    • Use a rubber or silicone spatula to pat the Smartie fudge into the tin, to prevent it from sticking or dragging around.
    • If you're struggling to cut the fudge into slices, you can warm your knife by dipping it into boiling water and drying it immediately before using.

    FAQs

How long will Smartie fudge last for?

This will last for up to two weeks, if you don't get through it all before then! Store it in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge.

    Can I freeze it?

Yes, this fudge freezes really well. Pop the pieces into airtight containers and freeze for up to 2 months. When you're ready to eat it, it can be defrosted at room temperature or for a little longer in the fridge. Do not refreeze.

Why is my fudge not setting?

The reason for a simple 3-ingredient fudge not setting is either that it wasn't heated for long enough or you didn't let it cool for long enough. The mixture should be heated until it's thick and glossy and the chocolate has melted fully. I recommend setting it in the fridge, which usually takes 2-3 hours.
