If you like Rice Krispie treats then you're going to absolutely love these Reese's Puffs marshmallow treats! They're packed with peanut butter flavour and have a delicious gooey, crunchy texture. They're made with just 5 simple ingredients and take less than 20 minutes of prep time to make, so they're great for a last-minute party dessert or lazy-day sweet treat.

If you're ready to get started with the recipe, keep reading to find my ingredient notes, top tips, step-by-step images and more. Or, if you prefer the quick and condensed version, you can find it in the recipe card at the end of the post. And if you like this recipe, make sure to check out my Reese's peanut butter cup brownies too! Enjoy!

    Ingredients

    • Butter: I like to use salted butter because it helps to enhance the flavours and cut through the sweetness a little. If you're using peanut butter that has salt added then you can just use unsalted butter.
    • Mini marshmallows: I used mini white marshmallows as they melt more easily but you can chop up larger marshmallows if that's all you have. You'll need 300g which is 6 cups of mini marshmallows or 4 cups of regular-sized marshmallows (measured whole).
    • Peanut butter: I recommend using the smooth, natural type of peanut butter (the type without any oils or sugar added) for the best texture and flavour. I used Meridian.
    • Reese's Puffs cereal: This cereal will give our treats a lovely crunchy texture and an extra burst of nutty flavour. For those in the UK like me, you can find this cereal in Iceland or B&M.
    • Chocolate Chips: These are not completely necessary but I highly recommend adding them! They'll make the treats look a bit more visually appealing and they'll add a nice contrast to the strong peanut butter flavour. Just sprinkle them on top and gently press them down into place. You can also melt them and drizzle the melted chocolate over the top if you feel like being a little bit fancy!

    Equipment

    • Saucepan: For melting the ingredients together. I'd recommend using a large one that will fit all of the ingredients, including the cereal, as it'll save you from washing up an extra bowl.
    • 8x10-inch tin: Or a 9x9-inch square tin. This will give you nice thick Reese's marshmallow treats and enough to serve a small crowd. If you'd like to use a different size of tin, use my cake pan converter tool to adjust the recipe quantities to fit.
    • Baking paper: Leave a bit hanging over the edges so you can easily lift the entire slab out when it's ready to cut.
    • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula: Or both if you like- for stirring and mixing. I prefer a spatula for melting the ingredients (it makes it easier to scrape excess from the sides of the pan) and a wooden spoon for mixing the cereal in.

How to make marshmallow Reese's Puffs treats

Step 1: Start by lining an 8x10-inch tin with baking paper, ready for your mixture to go into. Set it aside for now.

Step 2: To a large saucepan, add 7 tablespoons of butter, 300g (6 cups) of mini marshmallows, and 120g (½ cup) of smooth peanut butter. Place the saucepan over low heat on the stove and stir occasionally until the marshmallows and butter have melted.

Step 3: Remove the pan from the heat and pour in 240g (6 cups) of Reese's Puffs cereal. Mix well until all of the cereal is evenly coated in the marshmallow mixture.

Step 4: Transfer the mixture to your lined tin and press it down into place. While the mixture is still sticky, sprinkle over 55g (⅓ cup) of chocolate chips and gently press them down to help them stick.

Step 5: Let the mixture cool in the tin for about 1 hour then cut it into squares and enjoy!

    Top Tips

    • For extra gooey treats, add a small handful of mini marshmallows to the mixture just before pressing it into the tin.
    • Chocolate chips can be swapped for mini Reese's peanut butter cups for an even more decadent dessert.
    • If you want thicker bars, you can use an 8x8-inch tin instead of an 8x10-inch one. You can also make single servings by dividing the mixture into cupcake cases.
    • A silicone spatula is handy for pressing the mixture into the tin without sticking.
    • Once you remove the pan from the heat, the wet mixture will begin setting pretty fast so it's important to work as quickly as you can.

    FAQs

How long do marshmallow Reese's Puffs treats stay fresh?

If you store them properly in an airtight container in the fridge, they'll keep well for up to 5 days. Let them come to room temperature before serving for the best texture.

    Can I freeze this recipe?

Yes, you can freeze these treats for up to 2 months. You can either wrap the whole slab up tightly in plastic wrap or cut it into slices and place them into an airtight container. You can also freeze slices on a baking tray until they become solid then transfer them to a freezer bag. To defrost them, let them sit out on a wire rack or plate for an hour or so at room temperature. Do not refreeze.

    Can I use vegetarian marshmallows?

You sure can! They won't melt all the way down like regular marshmallows but when they become super soft and gooey, you can add the cereal in.

Do I have to use peanut butter?

Nope, these treats can be made easily without peanut butter just like a Rice Krispie treat! I'd recommend adding an extra tablespoon of butter or using slightly less cereal to keep them nice and gooey but other than that, you can simply omit the peanut butter.

    Are these treats gluten-free ?

Technically yes, but they are not suitable for those with gluten allergies. Although the cereal is not made with gluten, it does have a 'may contain gluten' label so there is a chance of cross-contamination. It's best to avoid them just to be on the safe side!
